Thanks to their unique functional added value, smart material technologies act as drivers of efficiency in high-tech applications across the fields of sensor technology, actuation, and acoustics. Often, applications in mobility, optics, and aerospace only become feasible through the use of smart materials. When combined with the capabilities of additive manufacturing technologies, a new class of multimaterial applications is emerging and increasingly finding its way into practical use.
Shape-memory alloy, nanographene, multimaterial AM
In the SMART Arena’s Material Hub, Haute Innovation showcases outstanding examples of current innovation—ranging from an Active Aero Wheel utilizing shape-memory alloys and nanographene for optical applications to a multimaterial rocket engine combustion chamber. The latter features integrated cooling channels and was additively manufactured using laser-based powder bed fusion of metals, combining the materials CW106C and 1.2709.
Prof. Dr. Sascha Peters has been invited to provide an overview of the SMART Arena Material Hub’s exhibits. He will focus in particular on the various additive manufacturing principles underpinning these innovations.
