Our planet faces immense challenges. The ecological footprint of human kind is already much larger than our planet’s resources can sustain and on top of, the world’s population is expected to grow to about 9 billion by 2050. Environmental sustainability is one of the biggest issues faced by the mankind at present.
The vision of a “circular economy” where we use resources sparingly and recycle endlessly is inspiring a lot of different branches. They understand that the circular economy does not aim to end growth; it aims to bend how we do things back into harmony with nature, so that growth can continue. Waste is increasingly seen as a valuable resource for industry. For that reason, more and more companies are looking for waste materials from other industries which they can use for their own products.
Especially in the food processing industry, the garbage can always seem to be full. Whether furniture made from old milk, sheet material made from potato peels or tableware made from carbonised food waste or textil like material which is created from lobster shells – there are no limits to the imagination.
As part of Interzum @Home, Diana Drewes will talk about some of the latest material developments by designers and present her own work in which mushroom fibers are used to bind various waste materials from different industries and extract materials from them for interior design.
