Upholstered furniture and mattresses are considered particularly challenging when it comes to their recyclability. To meet the diverse demands of biocompatibility, comfort, and durability, various materials were historically combined in ways that made it impossible to reintegrate the resources used into the cycle. Upholstered furniture was seen as the product of a material war!

Material Innovations for Circular Design

As a result, the recycling rate in some countries was practically zero. With new, highly developed materials and the principles of circular design, new solutions are currently emerging that fit into the concept of the circular economy. Examples include mattresses whose resources can be completely separated at the end of their life cycle and advanced materials from natural sources that do not require synthetic materials or adhesives.

In his presentation at the interzum forum italy, Prof. Dr. Sascha Peters will introduce some of the latest innovations in advanced, plastic-free materials that are particularly suitable for the circular design of complex furniture and interior products.
