Biocircular Interior Materials

interzum Trend Stage · Boulevard North · Koelnmesse

20 May 2025

If we are serious about transforming toward a circular economy, we must build our economy according to the principles of closed cycles. This doesn’t just mean processing used resources in a technical sense and returning them to industrial production. Above all, it also means allowing natural materials to circulate in the biological cycle and be left in such a way that they can be reused as nutrients for nature.

New Generation of Biomaterialien

This applies especially to all industries that traditionally use a high proportion of bio-based materials and natural resources. The furniture industry is facing the redesign of entire product groups, establishing a new understanding of materiality and giving new meaning to responsibility for the resources used.

Whether it’s seaweed-based furniture foams, seat shells made from compressed kraft paper, or lab-grown leather alternatives made from bacterial cellulose: a new generation of biomaterials is currently entering the market and will establish a new product system and circular business models in the furniture and interiors industries.

In his keynote speech, Prof. Dr. Sascha Peters will present some highlights of the interzum Trend Forum Materials & Nature and introduce a variety of biocircular innovations. The interzum special “Biocircular Materials” will be located in a central position in Hall 6 at Koelnmesse from May 20-23, 2025.
