Whether hemp or flax fibers, bacterial nanocellulose, or algae as starting materials: the most far-reaching design innovations currently come from the biological cycle.<\/p>\n

Mycelium as a High-Tech Material for Designers<\/h3>\n

The so-called fungal mycelium represents a special quality for designers in shaping their design processes. By specifically influencing the growth processes, designers are increasingly succeeding in developing sustainable manufacturing processes for textiles, panel materials, and interior solutions. BioBo, Mush Tiles, Myco Pouf: What may sound strange at first are the indications of the success of a special bio-design area.<\/p>\n

In the “Mycoustics<\/a>” project at the Fraunhofer IWU in Dresden, methods of additive manufacturing and 3D printing are currently being combined with insights into the natural growth of fungal mycelium to create both sound-reflecting and sound-absorbing surfaces in a single additive process step, and to use them for loudspeaker construction.<\/p>\n

At the invitation of Prof. Jure Miklavc, Prof. Dr. Sascha Peters will present the latest successes in this special biodesign field and showcase some of the resulting products in a lecture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Ljubljana (UL ALUO).<\/p>\n
