Green Deal Materials Box

Communication medium to promote material innovations within the framework of the European "Green Deal" strategy

Ordering party: European Commission, Brussels

What do desert beetles, apples and carbon fiber have in common? They are all starting points for the development of innovative materials that will have a lasting impact on the world of tomorrow. The Green Materials Box developed for the European Commission gives an insight into the properties of such future-changing materials and the possibilities they offer for sustainability and CO2-neutrality within a circular economy.

Be Part of the Ecological Transition. The European Green Deal.

The task was to implement a presentation box for innovations in sustainable materials as part of the European Commission’s “European Green Deal” strategy with the aim of sensitizing the general public to the possibilities and the necessity of developing ecological material solutions in the European member states.

The mission:

  • Development of an overall concept for an appealing and coherent communication of the topic
  • Selection of sustainable materials and acquisition of material samples from European manufacturers
  • Presentation of the materials including technical details and application options
  • Conception of the material presentation and communication options
  • Text development for information posters for each material, recipes for mixing your own material mixtures

Result
The Green Materials Box contains 5 material innovations for sustainable materials, which show the possibilities for an ecological change of our economic and product culture in different dimensions. The presentation includes alternatives to CO2-intensive materials based on agricultural residues as well as natural insulation materials with a high heat storage capacity. Consumable packaging shows us a way to a plastic-free world and possibilities of reducing the amount of plastic in the world’s oceans. Experiments with smart materials based on a conductive carbon fiber paper as well as a textile derived from the Namib beetle for the extraction of drinking water from fog in desert regions near the coast are intended to introduce and open up the understanding of the possibilities of innovative materials science to broad social classes.

The Green Materials Box contains the following materials:

  • Ooho – Edible packaging for liquids (developer: NotPla, UK)
  • Neptune grass – Natural insulation from the sea (manufacturer: Neptutherm, Germany)
  • Apple Skin – Vegan leather alternative from apple pomace (manufacturer: Frumat, Italy)
  • Namib beetle textile – Harvesting water from fog (manufacturer: Essedea, Germany
  • KohPa – Electrically conductive paper (manufacturer: RESO Oberflächentechnik, Germany)
